The threaded hole locations don’t match. I probed the center of the jaw as oriented to bore and thread mill. I then threaded a SHCS to check the centers of the holes relative to center of the jaw in that plane/orientation. I’m not sure what to trust. I am factoring in that the threads are faulty. Probed center is offset +0.119” in Y from the center in the model but is 0.135-0.137” probed. Distance in X from center is 1.25” (give or take a few thou) which does seem to match the model. Strange that the hole spacing matches in X, which is a different width overall, but it does not in Y, which is the same as the model.
I was hoping to use the existing jaw as my stock and a copy of it with bigger bore/threads for the bore and tap cycle.
Any other ideas on locating the XY center of damaged threaded holes? I figure better to be as precise as possible here given I’ve got one shot to get it right…
probe the recesses for the bolt heads in the jaws. That should give you the centers on both. Also the threads in the bolts aren’t holding the jaw in place on the vice, so a little gap is expected.
I swapped to a longer probe stylus with a large ruby ball, adjusted concentricity to 0.0001” and probed all the way at the bottom (0.75-1” deep) of the threaded hole of the jaw which was not used and is not damaged.
I get a center of the hole at 0.145” and 0.153” from the jaw center. The center distance matches probing the Y edges of the jaw at X0 for each bore center. The distance from +Y to -Y matches the CAD at 28mm.
I re-read your original reply and see what you are referring to and that does make a lot of sense.
Probing the bore of a jaw installed would work if there is enough room to probe that bore without the probe operations interfering with the socket head cap screw. I’ll take a look at that. I could machine a pair of those down a bit to where there is more room to probe or get a shallower head version.
Overall, we are agreed on probing the threads not being a great option, which is why I started out by probing the OD of the socket head cap screw that is used to fasten the removable jaw to the fixed jaw, since the OD is even and round. That does depends upon it seating properly in the threads, which may mean some sort of intermediate thread repair just get it thread “correctly”.
I guess the question is if there is sufficient error in a bad thread interface and probing where it is off ~0.02” in Y but seems to be within reasonable tolerance for X from the center of the jaw.
Cut off 2 bolts, or find right size gauge pin.
With in 0.002 will work. Drill willl follow the hole for the most part. Hell, I’ve eye balled stuff using a gauge pin sliding in out of a collet.
Not critical here. Unless the jaw holes are gnats ass tight on the bolts.
You don’t want the bolt holes that tight on a vice like this. The jaws holes are designed so you can slip feeler stock under them and align them with the vice or with the mill or ideally both. But the jaws are supposed to be adjustable.
Thanks for the detailed measurements. We checked our records and can confirm there was a production change on these vises in late 2023 where the engraved logo was replaced with the badge plate, so your two vises are from before and after that change. We don’t have documentation tying the customer-facing solid model to a specific revision, so for this repair we’d trust the physical part over the CAD. I’m following up internally on the model and will post what I find.
Thanks for confirming. The model for the older engraved one would be helpful or at least print/dimensions of the holes to make a correct replacement fixed jaw if my thread repair attempt is not successful. Waiting on the Loc-Tite to cure before it goes back into service and exposed to coolant.
