I have a Tormach 1500mx that was purchased earlier this year, along with the wireless probe and toolsetter system. Yesterday we had an issue with the ATC and it dropped a tool holder after a tool change, right on to the tool setter stylus. The ATC had a couple screws that had worked themselves loose so that the carrier was wobbly, I hadn’t noticed yet, and the spindle couldnt grab the tool holder properly which allowed it to drop onto the stylus. The part that broke is a part that is meant to break when something like this happens. I called up Tormach to see if I could get that replacement piece from them and unfortunately was told no, I would have to find a Marposs distributor to sell me one. All Tormach could do is give me the part #1027877527, which was helpful I guess. Anyways I started searching and was able to get someone on the phone at motionusa.com They had to look it up and said they would get back to me. Today I got an email saying I could get it shipped in 2-3 days for the low price of $150. Ouch, they must make them in very small batches to charge so much… So anyways check your ATC for any loose screws.
Tangentially, I need to build a shield for this thing. I used to own a few HAAS machines at my old business and I had built the protector shown in my attached image for it. It saved the tool setter quite a few times when employees chucked parts out of the vices at high rates of speed. It wouldnt have really helped in this situation unfortunately…
