Solid models for lathe tooling?

Are there any 3D models available for Tormach lathe tooling? Fusion is getting ready to release the ability to import 3D models into the tool library. Anyone find a source for these or will tormach be providing these anytime soon?

Thanks

Scott

I don’t know how to use Fusion, but in Mastercam, you can create 3d tools. Almost every brand of tool manufacturer have 3d files of their tools. Download the 3d model with the insert and build your own. It’s a long process, but it can be done. Jeff

Thanks Daniel that’s what I’m trying to do unfortunately I cannot find the 3d model for the tools purchased from Tormach.

What type of tool are you talking about, I’m curious

stuff like this Deluxe Turret Tooling Kit (3/4 in.)

3288A814_Turning Carbide Insert Holder.STEP (1.1 MB)

You can download many models from McMaster and many tooling companies. This one come from McMaster

Thanks I’m aware of that, I’m hoping that Tormach will make them available so I don’t have to go through the reverse engineering required to go download them from various tool companies and upload them hoping they’re close. It doesn’t seem like a big ask for Tormach to make them available…

If you want to ask Tormach something about the lathe, I think you need to forget about it. I’m sorry, that’s what I’ve experienced in the past.

LOL sorry to hear that, not at all my experience over the last several years…

I don’t think anyone on here is saying that Tormach is perfect (we are all human, after all) but I guess I’ve tempered my expectations in dealing with businesses having been a small business owner for many years. I do think a unique problem in this particular space is that the tempering of expectations is tougher to do when it is a purchase that ranges anywhere from $5k-60k+ and in some cases, is related to earning your living…

From my understanding, they offer lifetime technical support and it seems to be tied to the machine and not the owner. I don’t see other companies, in any field/space, offering that generous a level of support…let alone others in this space…as well as providing the technical docs for SKUs that are end-of-life for an end-user to repair them as an option.

I get that they don’t have unlimited resources to be able to do everything. I would think that a request like Scott’s would stand on its own given there is a justification in terms of ongoing revenue / value add / built-in marketing/sales to have that information/setup in Fusion given its wide user base (compared to other CAD/CAM and given that many buy Tormach because we are tinkering and don’t have the space or budget for a “big” CNC) and Fusion is the go-to for that segment of customer “makers”.

I would imagine if the previous criteria is not easily visible or baked into a request, maybe Tormach would consider a more formal mechanism for the user community to propose features/modifications/bug fix priority akin to how open source software handles it on Github where votes/surveys from the user base would be the numbers to drive decisions.

@Ashraf_Farrag all great points and exactly the same way I see it. I continue to be perplexed by people who think they are buying a 250K industrial machine for 10-20% of that and then are not satisfied with free support that I think is just about as good as any paid model I’ve been involved with. Yes, sometimes you have to wait a bit, 24 hours, but I have seldom had to wait longer than that. I have found them very interested in getting to the bottom of whatever issue I’ve had and are more than willing to take what ever time is required. With that said I suppose if you come at them hard with unreasonable demands looking for them to solve your cad/cam issues or use of 3rd party posts etc. They may be less able to help. I’ve found them to be helpful even when it was a skill gap on my part when first trying new things.

All that to say I think constructive criticism is fair, but nonspecific complaining is really just noise.

Lastly on the topic of my request, They make 3D models available for a lot of their products, I gotta believe CAD models exist for tooling so I wonder why they cannot provide the models. I suppose there could be licensing issues as I’m sure the IP belongs to someone else but if that’s the case just say so and move on.

I really like Tormach as a company and appreciate their support of this space. I think nudging them in the directions we hope they’ll go is legit and usually they are willing to do it!
