I recently purchased a fixture plate and Gen 3 mod vise from Saunders Machine Works (SMW).
In order to further improve their usefulness I designed/built soft jaws for the mod vise which are symmetrical in x, y and z and can be used for four different projects.
While I was at it I also designed/built a set of soft jaws for my Tormach 5" vise which are symmetrical in x and z and can be used for two different projects.

Michael,
I’m curious if you thought about making the SMW soft jaws deeper? I have found there isn’t always much space between the front edge of the jaw and the bolt head which causes some extra time to be spent figuring out just how far the work needs to be into the jaw. Just curious.
Thanks

Hi Scott
Of course, you could make the soft jaw deeper.
For the moving part you can maintain the concept of symmetry in x, y and z direction
(by the means of having the opportunity to use the same soft jaw four times).
The fixed side has a backstop for the clamp and that jaw can only be made “deeper” on one
side (in y). Therefore that jaw could only be used twice (flipped over).
Best

Nice pair of videos and very well produced. It looks like you made your own chip guard for the 770M. Have you thought about a video on that concept/process?
Hi Mike, thanks for you kind remarks.
I made a video about a custom stand for the 770M which includes the (partial) chip guard or enclosure. You can fin it on this forum under “Custom Stand for Tormach 770M” or on youtube on my channel “michael brombeiss”
Thanks Michael. I find your YouTube channel (and subscribed) and will look for the forum posts now.
