Santa stocking holder

I just finished this stocking holder for my daughter. Santa took me way longer than I care to admit to sort out in CAM, then the rest was pretty strait forward. Santa and the base plate were cut on my 770M and the knob on the 8L.

The knob was a fun challenge in the I ended up cutting the threads first then held a threaded insert in the chuck to turn the knob.

The file for Santa is an STL from thingiverse which is why it is faceted.

Looks really nice! Great job!

Did you use 4 axis or did you do it in 4 indexed passes?

Would you be willing to share the CAM file? Was it Fusion 360 or some other CAM?

Fantastic question!
I indexed it in four positions to rough it out, then did one spiral finishing pass with an 1/8" BEM

Yeah, let me tidy up the program and I can share the files.

Well, it took me a while but I have a file to share.
Here is a link to the Fusion360 file for this project. It includes original STL, the models for the stand and soft-jaws, plus all of the tool paths. I reduced the resolution of the original STL so that I could get Fusion to create the surfacing tool path. The original STL came from Thingiverse but that was a while ago and I don’t have the exact link to credit.

Tools:

Tool Holders:

  • General tool holders with the following exceptions:
  • T9 is the 3/8" end mill except in an ER16M tool holder with the tool pulled out more than normal
  • the 1/8" tools are held in an AB Tools Accu-hold tool extender. Accu-Holds Standard | AB Tools, Inc.

Santa Cam Overview:
I broke the roughing into a several different tool paths for a few reasons:

  • to take softer cuts way out on the un-supported end
  • to remove material in “layers” to clear the way for cutting later on where the tool holder would collide otherwise.
  • once the roughing is done I came in with the 1/8" Ball running 10K RPM, 0.002" feed per tooth, and 0.002" step over.

Let me know if you have any questions about my process here.

@Mike_Kinney I just wanted to make sure you saw the file since you asked for it directly.

That’s amazing! Thanks for sharing.

I’m going through this trying to convert to metric tooling and your tool description “1/8 Ball Thinglongerer” is making me laugh every time I see it. I also name my tools. I have “Sir BreaksALot” and “Serial Driller” there’s more but not as good.

haha! I can definitely relate to Sr. BreaksAlot. I added a 0.035" tool to my library a while back and bough a few extra knowing that I would need to break one or two before I learned my lesson.

@Dr_Harold_Jones please do keep us in the loop when you make one. I have a Christmas goal of making a few other designs as well.

Davie, that’s pretty interesting. Any pictures of the finished part?

I’m wanting to try this one in aluminum…

@Scott_Dube yep, the first picture posted in this thread is the finished stocking holder.

I love the alligator idea. For a while I have been scheming on gluing up several different species of wood for something similar.

I’m scared of the mess wood will make in the machine… :grimacing:

Just get yourself one of these and some 10” ducting and all that wood dust will be in the wind.

A 100,000 cubic feet per hour might be a little much. You could blow up a bouncy house at the same time.

Seriously though as I can hear everyone saying don’t cut wood in your mill!
If I did cut wood but after I clean the ways. Is it still bad?
I want to understand this reaction between wood and way oil.

You got me thinking with the idea of gluing up different woods. For this guy, a dark wood for the gator and like a purple heart or something for the water would be cool, stacked up the right way in Z could be interesting.

I am working on trim for my house and am using a bunch of Poplar. The green hue of that would make a great gator.

I got the dust collection covered…

I was thinking of a matching set of 4 , Santa Ms Clause and 2 elves.
If Santa and ms clause were grouped into the same operation and 2 elves on one operation that would be the easiest way in my opinion.
I don’t have a lathe to do the base though so im milling everything.
