Retract to clearance plane during facing in conversational

What is the point in retracting to clearance plane in conversational facing if the part is narrower than the cutter and the toolpath is just back and forth movement in either X or Y axis? That happened on 1100MX running PP v2.12.3, but can also be reproduced in the virtual controller on the PP hub (v2.12.0, see the screenshots). The z retract to clearance immediately followed by z move to the next z level doesn’t make much sense to me.

I’m going to say it was engineered for safe simplicity over efficiency. Conversational isn’t going to give you speed run but it will save you a trip back to the drawing board (pc).

PP doesn’t know the width of the part, right? Could be for chip clearance, but most likely it’s just an edge case and the code doesn’t differentiate a back and forth pass vs the general spiral.

The general spiral retracts only 0.1" from the finished Z level before rapid XY move to the start of the spiral. In addition, the back and forth move goes to the next Z level at both ends of the travel without XY rapid to the beginning. So, it does differentiate.
