Problem with 440 (possible electrical noise) ? Any input?

Hey All,

Here at my work we have a 440 and I personally have a 1100M. My boss bought the 440 for a project about 4 years ago I think it was. I used it for this one project and the mill has sat unused and unmoved since then. SAD! Anyways, I recently decided to use it to trim some Vacuform parts. I got the machine up and running, ran my maintenance program a couple times to get the screws moving and spindle back in running shape, all was good till it wasn’t. While working on probe set up, eventually the computer crashed after sitting for maybe an hour or so. So I shut down and reboot etc. and get back up running again to have the same thing happen several times until I call tech support. Norman suggested a failing hard drive, which I replaced (its an SSD).

The control/computer will lock up, no mouse, no keys jog ect, no jog wheel etc. It appeared to be totally hard crashed but I’m not exactly sure on that at this point. The touch screen monitor also loses functionality. I have on occasion, been able to

unplug the mouse, USB hub etc and get functionality back to use the control to then have it crash out again. Since this whole thing started there has been no change from when it started and IF it sits there it will crash at some point. VERY frustrating when your trying to get parts cut!

SO I’m like ok gunna be good to go now with new hard drive. NOPE! After new the hard drive I’m still having crashing issues. Its very intermittent and is the same as before the hard drive, happens after mill is sitting for while OR yesterday in the middle of me working on something etc, its very random. Has never crashed while running my program which is a very small fast program to trim my part, thank god!.

SO after the hard drive I’ve been working with John in tech about this and he is point me toward possible electrical noise issues that are the cause. I’m slowly working my way though his check list of things to rule out. Currently, I have moved the moved the power cords that were literally strung on top of a really large electrical conduit. He suggested adding an 20-25 foot extension cord to try and reduce the noise coming into the machine. At this point its still crashing, have not hit the entire list but next is to isolate all peripherals to see its is mouse, keys, jog wheel, monitor etc.

A side note is that when I took the hard drive out I did try and hook it up to my USB to hard drive reader and nothing comes up in windows SO maybe the hard drive is actually dead Im not sure.
Here are some pictures of the area where the mill is set up, it’s a mess but I never took the time to set up properly because there is never a need to use the machine here at my company till now. See all the large electrical subpanel, shut off, and that really big box on the ground not sure what it is, but all that electrical stuff was added after we moved into the building some of whitch was added for our big fiber laser and btw it sits maybe 15 feet away from the Tormach, per Johns input it could be part of the problem.

Anyways, sorry such a LOOOONG post.

Has anyone ever had issues with electrical noise crashing their machine? What did you do to resolve it? This is really frustrating!

I’m not saying it’s impossible, but I’m very skeptical of the electrical noise theory. Now John in support has been at this a while and I have faith in his advice, but he must have some info on these machines being vulnerable if that’s the explanation.

If it were me, I’d find a completely different computer to try this on. It feels to me like a hardware issue inside the control computer. I would try to figure out a way to rule that in or out, then if it’s still doing go back to the electrical noise theory.

Can you install and run Path Pilot on “any” computer? Not gunna lie I feel like I’m chasing my tail!

I’m sure you can, it’s just running linux an that is not ressource hungry like windows. The issue will be how the computer communicates with the control board. I think I’ve seen some older ones use a parallel port newer one use an RJ45. I’d look around and see what there is for info on replacing the computer out there. Do you know how it connects to the computer? Take a picture of the connections I’m sure people here can help ID it.

A nearby TIG welder firing up would crash my 1100 every time…

Can you put a fluke meter on it and record the power volts/htz for a few hours? Also you could get a power conditioner, they use them for audio components sometimes. I would say that it’s more likely a loose connection somewhere than a power line issue but it’s hard to pin down.

I would unplug and plug all connectors.
Inspect them for cleanliness, corrosion etc.
Reinstall PP.
Take tools to the electrical cabinet, check for tight. Power unplugged of course.

We resolved this issue, to many things plugged into the same cords and outlets. We isolated the controller, machine, accessories like work lights going to there own dedicated outlet sockets and all is good now.
