Is there a way to make the MPG motion control on the X or Z axis smooth. It is very jerky. The way it works now is each click of the MPG wheel makes it move a specific distance based on the multiplier knob. It would run smoother if the control software would monitor the MPG pulse rate and then adjust the motion velocity. Any way to make this happen?
Todd,
What version of Pathpilot are you on? We did some work on smoothing out the jog pendant motion last year but fundamentally the pendant sends discrete steps that Pathpilot starts/stops at, that is 100% intentional and without some method to differentiate between steps and continuous motion (such as the separate dials on the jog shuttle) the control scheme would be… convoluted… to say the least.
Thank you,
Norman
Hi Norman,
Currently the version on my 8L is v2.12.3.
On my HAAS mill the jog motion using the MPG wheel is very smooth. I don’t know how they are doing that. I think they are limiting the max velocity for MPG moves but keeping track of the number of MPG output counts to move. I think it has a very short pulse buffer so that it does not build up too many pulses and continue to move to far after the wheel stops spinning. If you have played with the HAAS control system you will know what I am trying to describe.
I use this lathe to do a lot of manual turning, so a smooth action on the MPG wheel would be nice. When I use the arrow keys on the keyboard it is a lot smoother, but harder to stop at a specific position. Also, the move velocity with the keyboard is to fast even when set at 1%.
Thanks for the quick response on this topic. I am a controls engineer by trade, so this kind of stuff is very interesting to me.
Best regards,
