Does anyone have an experience using a floating tap holder on the 15L ? Rigid tapping is not working for the thread I require (M12 X 0.5) with the thread being oversize each time. I’ve got the holder dialed in to around 0.01mm in each direction so i think its simply beyond the capability of the machine hence looking at a floating holder.
@Paul_Prescott how oversized are you seeing your threads come out with rigid tapping? I would think a floating holder would really only help is in the Z direction, not with X (concentricity with the part).
A somewhat belated follow up. The floating tap holder resolved the issues completely. The threads are now perfect.
Very late here but I’ve used a floater fore a long time. The hole location pulls the tap and a little wiggle room in X helps it center.
I do not tap anymore on the lathe without a floating head, tired of breaking tap. On AliExpress, you can buy ER collet with a square on the smaller end for tap.
What floating tap holder did you get, is it clutched? I am also looking for one for my 8L. I ordered one but not happy with it.
I bought a Tegara 3/4 ER20 floating tap collet chuck. Off amazon of all places as I was unable to locate anywhere else that would ship to AU. Not clutched. No issues with using it thus far although i only really need it for very fine threads.
