Chess Set

After talking to several people about the chess set that I created, I wanted to post my Fusion files in case you can use them to make your own or learn something. Ultimately, I made this set on an 8L lathe and 770M with a microArc4 on it.

Pawn:
Here is a version of the pawn I made in PathPilot > Conversational, I ended up remaking this in Fusion to get a better profile.
Pawn_1.nc (3.6 KB)
Here is the Fusion360 file for this:
Chess_Pawn v11 v4.f3d (194.2 KB)

Knight:
This was a fun one that involved cutting a “loli-pop” on the lathe, then throwing it in a 4th axis/ collet block to cut the horse, then back on the lathe to part it off.
Chess_Knight v48 v10.f3d (693.0 KB)

Queen:
This one was a wild one. This part involved Fusion360 to cut the profile, hacking PathPilot to get the crown, then a 4th axis to cut the castellations.
This post has more info on how I made this piece. F360 face turning help - #2 by Davie
Chess_Queen v7 v15.f3d (241.8 KB)

King:
Pretty straight forward part on the lathe, with the 4th axis for the cross on top.
Chess_king v9.f3d (223.2 KB)

Bishop:
Straight forward lathe part here.
Chess_Bishop v9.f3d (213.5 KB)

Rook:
I think of this one as a queen lite. I used the same tooling and principles for this one.
Chess_Rook v8.f3d (250.5 KB)

I will pull the Rook and Queen face turning files off my lathe and update this post when I have a few minutes.

Nicely done. I designed a set quite a few ago, made a Monty Python knight to fill the hole. Working on a new knight off and on but the design and machining are tough, at least for me. Alot of profiling. SXZC – Mitsubishi Materials USA
These are great, LH and RH will get anywhere.

Oooo now that is a cool round knight. I have seen a few attempts at a knight on a lathe and have never really been impressed, until now.
