I try not to re-cut a profile that was started in Op1. If you have the clearance in Op2 to do the whole profile then that makes sense.

I use a cheap Chinese probe. As stated here, use a soft touch micrometer to test probe tip run out. I actually put my tip in the lathe and bumped it around, I installed it in a TTS holder and never take it out! Locked spindle and same direction always! Probe ball diameter is critical also, Playing with all this I can measure and locate an 123 block with sub 0.001 accuracy. Very repeatable for a cheep tool!

I may have not done it right. I use a 40mm ring gauge and tried to follow the directions. Mine is a 440 and I can count on about 0.0013 sometimes better.
I use a dial indicator if I need to have closer dimensions.
