Anyone add encoder to pcnc1100 for rigid tapping?

I have a pcnc1100 Series III with the older style ATS. I would like to be able to do ridgid tapping. Has anyone here added the necessary Hardware and software changes to do it? Is it possible? Any hardware recommendations? Thank you.

Are you doing something that a Tension-compression tapping holder won’t work well for? I use them on my 1100MX 95% of the time even when I rigid tap with it just for the safety factor. Of course if you want to do peck tapping and the like they don’t work so well for that.

A guy on CNC Zone Forum did it long before Tormach added the feature.
He never documented it much and at that time had to modify PP code also.
Turbostep was his forum name and lives in Switzerland. By far one of the more experienced users of an 1100 mill.
It is possible is about all I can say.

Does the 1100mx support peck taping with rigid taping? And in relation to the original post, would an 1100 upgraded support peck/rigid taping? If that is the goal.

IIRC you need orientation as well as speed for peck tapping. A quick search of the Tormach site suggests the 15L and MXs can do it. I’ve never messed with it.

I can use the tension compression taping but I thought it would be nice to add the spindle encoder while I have my machine apart. I’m not sure how much easier rigid taping would be but I thought the hardware would be pretty inexpensive to add so I would give it a try. Not necessary but just giving it some thought.
