770M with new servos - Y axis acting strange when referencing

I’ve referenced my machine a handful of times since I installed the new servo motors. I noticed that when I go to reference the Y axis it’s pretty “violent”. It sounds like it’s making some VERY fast direction changes or maybe even hitting something. Several times the Y servo has faulted while referencing and I’ve had to move the y axis away from the limit switch a bit to get it to reference. This last time, it didn’t fault but the sound it made gave me concern. Has anyone else noticed this with the servo upgrade?

Check the end of your lead screw. There should be a nut holding a thick rubber washer on there. The servos use a torque/current sense method to reference rather than the limit switches and they are meant to “collide” with that rubber washer to provide a bit of cushion.

On my machine, not long after I did the upgrade, I noticed my Y axis was behaving similarly to what you’re describing. I also noticed that the zero reference was moving upwards of .5” between power cycles. Turned out that nut had worked it’s way off and the washer had fallen off which meant the axis was hitting the casting, causing both the load noise, and the fault condition. Thankfully, the parts had fallen into my chip tray and I was able to recover them and reinstall. No problems since then.

The washer is still on there. I don’t think that’s it.

Drive coupling tight?

Should be, just got done upgrading to the servos and everything works fine other than this and another issue I am having that I don’t think it motor related (machine doesn’t like to ramp into pockets and things start rumbling - separate issue that has been happening since before though).

If you haven’t already, I would submit a ticket with Tormach. It’s possible the servo has the wrong tuning profile loaded. They can provide you with the correct one to see if that’s the issue or suggest other possible fixes.
