Anyone use the 8L in a production environment, and how long a part with a chuck?

Recently had a look at how much we spend on machine shops, and turns out we spend about 1-2x the cost of an 8L lathe a year on making metal things that are round. Obviously material costs, consumables, and manhours mean it won’t actually pay for itself in a year, but the current management actually trusts me to make investments that may take a few years to fully pay off.

Does anyone do production work on an 8L? It would be batches of ~20, relatively simple parts without a lot of critical tolerances.

The big issue is that one of the parts is 6" long when finished and 2.5" in diameter, and has a 2.25" 12UN internal thread on one end. Would there be enough space after mounting a chuck and the part with some extra to be able to mount a tool to do internal threads on the end?

Hello @Michael_Newton

Firstly, welcome to the Tormach Community Forums :grinning:

The 8L can handle a production environment just fine and has a travel of 4.5" (114 mm) in the X-Axis and 10 in" (254 mm) with tailstock in the Z-Axis, so your part should fit just snug if you use really short tools.

I would recommend scheduling a virtual or in-person pre-sales consultation with our sales team at Pre-Sales Consultation Request - Machines and bringing a print of the part. Our team will be able to get you squared away with the right equipment to get you cutting chips.

I hope this info helps.
