Adding air blast to machines - Necessary electronics?

Looking to add an airblast to an 1100MX

Already the plumbing is in place. The actual on/off solenoid will depend on what I can do electrical wise to hook it up to the control.

I saw 32616 - Tormach PathPilot Upgrade - USB M-Code I/O Interface Kit and I believe this is what I would need, but want to confirm with the community as all of you are probably more knowledgeable on tormachs than I am. Right now the plan is to wire an NC solenoid that activates via the I/O relay and concurrently using an air-piloted valve to open the main line. Eventually I would like to wire in a switch-valve to flow both coolant and air through the same lines since the setup I have is much better than the OEM coolant on the 1100MX
I should add, this is under the assumption that the 1100MX does not have built-in I/O connections. HAAS and other machine tool builders usually do, but Tormach lacks easy-to-access technical documentation such as this.

Any technical documentation regarding the I/O interface kit or relevant electronics is welcome.

I also debated putting this in the pathpilot or mill forum - I decided pathpilot since type of upgrade can be used on any machine, in theory.

HAAS and other machine tool builders usually do, but Tormach lacks easy-to-access technical documentation such as this.

The Tormach website has PDFs of the instructions for all their machines, PathPilot programming and the various machine accessories available to download without even registering for an account or proving you own a machine. Machine self-service instructions are included for owner self-service. Schematics for the machine and controller board information are included in the machine’s instruction manual. Machines and boards/parts that are end of life have schematics and firmware on GitHub to provide documentation to further their position in support of consumer right to repair.

The source for the control software, PathPilot, to modify as you please, is on your controller. They provide free technical support, for the life of the machine, even if you are not the original owner. Contact support directly (this forum is mostly for owners to chat with each other) for assistance.

The USB I/O board is mentioned in the 1100 MX manual several times. Documentation for that device is also posted on the website as well.

Here is an example of a similar implementation/solution for ETS air blast in terms of electronics and hardware.

Schematic sheet 7 of the 1100MX manual gets you air blast without the USB board using the MQL output, which looks like a 110V solenoid, not withstanding whatever other custom air/fluid control routing you are talking about for trying to run them both from the same plumbing and would need to control outside standard machine codes to trigger flood vs. MQL. Maybe NO/NC or multiple solenoid ports handles that.

Flood, MQL and air blast would need USB if you want to control them individually with machine codes.

Zachary,

For an MQL or air blast outlet specifically this is what you want: https://tormach.com/media/asset/s/b/sb10828_mist_power_outlet_m-mx_1223a.pdf.

I’m not sure what other documentation you’re looking for, the electrical schematic is freely available on our website and a paper copy is in your electrical cabinet. The Tech Doc on the USB IO module is on the product page you linked (though it does need to be updated for the new IO Mapping feature (not relevant to your goal) that I haven’t had time yet to write up).

Thank you,

Norman

The mist power outlet will work for what I need.

The manuals probably do exist for everything I need, its just difficult to navigate. I wish some parts of the website / store / PDF’s were linked together so it was easier to find relevant information.

Thanks all.
